This page is to explain the students opinion of math during their sophomore year, and luckily for you, the reader, math was great for me.
Math as a tenth grader looked a lot like coming into class in the morning and immediately beginning collaboration with your group (Groups of 4 or 5, depending on where you sat) which is not exactly a bad thing. When we weren't be taught how to work on certain problems, we were doing them. We were given difficult problems, and as a group we were told to answer them with our group. Most of these problems couldn't be solved alone, so group work was necessary in Math 2.
We were taught critical skills such as explaining our reasoning, questioning answers, working together, collaboration, and although the class was slow at times, these skills will be with us for life.
At the end of each unit we were told to make a portfolio of the unit, so here are the three different units, and their portfolios, that we worked on this year:
Quadratics
Probability
Similarity
In the quadratics portfolio, we learned how to factor binomials/trinomials, learned the quadratic equation, and was able to create a portfolio with the papers we worked on.
This was basically the same process, except for similarity and probability we were able to analyze data given to us and come up with probabilities.
With similarity, we were told to compare triangle and quadrilaterals, and prove that they are similar.
My strengths and weaknesses in this class:
My strengths are definitely the content. I like to think of myself as very content savvy, so I was able to come through and work on the problems very easily. I would use this strength to help my group after I finished, not exactly telling them the answer but I was helping them get to the solution..
My weaknesses was if I wasn't able to solve a problem and my group would ask me for help, it would be harder for me to help since I work better if I know how to get to the solution, so I could guide them, and I have problems guiding people not knowing the solution to the answer beforehand.
Something I'd revise is absolutely nothing. What happened; happened, and I think ti's for the best.
I would push myself by trying to work harder with my group, which has been my goal from the very beginning, to work better with my group, and I feel I have definitely improved from the beginning of the year.
Some of my favorite moments from this year in Math has been getting the new groups and being able to work with them, as staying in one group for too long turned bland very fast.
How I have personally grown has been in my attitude towards the school, towards math, and everything in general has improved as I continue another year.
